Linguistics

Linguistics is the science of language — perhaps the most central and unique human ability. The linguistics minor at º£½ÇÂÛ̳ is an interdisciplinary academic program that surveys a broad range of topics on human language and communication.

Overview

A perspective on world language use informed by the study of linguistics is a powerful element of an educated person’s knowledge base as a global citizen. Linguistics will help prepare students for careers in a wide variety of fields, including international business and public affairs, computer science, counseling, psychology, speech therapy and speech pathology, marketing, journalism, translation, and teaching English as a foreign language, as well as qualifying them for the study of linguistics at the graduate level.

Curriculum

All linguistics minors take the survey course, Introduction to Linguistics. They also take three more courses from a range of offerings, such as Cognition, History of the English Language, Hispanic Linguistics, Linguistic Anthropology (Language, Culture, & Power), Media and Politics, Symbolic Logic, and courses in Computer Science. In addition, they study two foreign languages and complete a capstone project in their senior year.
